Timing varies by region. North Alabama runs later in spring and earlier in fall. Central Alabama is the middle zone. South Alabama and the Gulf Coast warm up earlier and stay active later. 1. About this guide
This is a working reference for homeowners caring for a lawn anywhere in Alabama. It’s long on purpose: most “Southern lawn care” advice on the internet is written for the entire warm-season zone, which stretches from Texas to Georgia and includes very different climates and soils. Alabama lawns deserve their own playbook.
Throughout this guide, when we say “warm-season grasses” we mean the Bermudagrass, Zoysiagrass, Centipedegrass, and St. Augustinegrass that cover the vast majority of Alabama lawns. When we say “transition zone” we mean parts of north Alabama where cool-season grasses (mostly tall fescue) can survive but struggle in summer.

2. Alabama climate at a glance
Alabama spans roughly five climatic zones from north to south, and your lawn care calendar shifts noticeably across them. The single most important thing for a homeowner to know is which USDA Plant Hardiness Zone they’re in — that tells you what survives the winter, when to expect frost, and how long your growing season actually is.
USDA Hardiness Zones across Alabama
- Zone 7a / 7b — the highest elevations of north Alabama (Fort Payne, Scottsboro, Cullman) and the Sand Mountain area. Minimum winter temperatures average 0–10°F. Last frost is typically in mid- to late April.
- Zone 8a — most of central Alabama (Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, Montgomery). Minimum winter temperatures average 10–15°F. Last frost is usually late March to early April.
- Zone 8b — south-central Alabama (Selma, Greenville, Dothan’s northern edge). Minimum winter temperatures average 15–20°F.
- Zone 9a — south Alabama coastal plain (Mobile, Gulf Shores, Foley). Minimum winter temperatures average 20–25°F. Frost is rare but possible in January and early February.

Alabama lawn care by city — where this guide applies
The principles in this guide apply across the entire state, but timing, soil, and grass-type specifics vary by region. Here’s a quick reference for where you live:
- Birmingham, Hoover, Vestavia Hills, Mountain Brook, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, Trussville, Pelham — Central Alabama, Zone 8a, Piedmont red clay soil. Most of this guide’s default recommendations are calibrated to this region. Bermuda and Zoysia dominate.
- Huntsville, Madison, Decatur, Florence, Athens — North Alabama, Zone 7a/7b, Tennessee Valley loam soils. Spring green-up runs 2–3 weeks later than Birmingham. Tall fescue is viable here for shaded yards; Bermuda still dominates sunny ones.
- Montgomery, Selma, Auburn, Opelika, Prattville — Central-south Alabama, Zone 8a/8b. A mix of red clay and Black Belt prairie soils — check your specific location, as Black Belt is alkaline and behaves differently.
- Mobile, Daphne, Fairhope, Foley, Gulf Shores, Orange Beach — South Alabama coastal, Zone 9a, sandy coastal-plain soil. Year-round green is possible. St. Augustine thrives here, and frost is rare. Bermuda dormancy can be shorter.
- Dothan, Enterprise, Ozark, Eufaula — Southeast Alabama, Zone 8b, sandy coastal-plain soils. Long growing season but distinctly different from coastal areas because of inland temperatures.

Growing season length
Your growing season is the number of frost-free days per year. In Alabama:
- North Alabama (Zone 7): roughly 180–200 frost-free days, mid-April through early November.
- Central Alabama (Zone 8a): 200–220 frost-free days, late March through mid-November.
- South Alabama (Zone 9a): 240+ frost-free days, year-round in coastal areas with rare frost events.
Warm-season grasses go dormant after the first hard frost (28°F or below sustained) and don’t resume active growth until soil temperatures reach about 65°F. That means a 6–8 month “active” lawn period in central Alabama, with the rest of the year being dormancy and maintenance.
Humidity and rainfall
Alabama is wet. Annual rainfall averages 52–65 inches across most of the state — well above the U.S. average of about 30 inches, according to the NOAA Alabama State Climate Summary. But the distribution matters more than the total:
- Winter and early spring: regular, evenly-spaced rain.
- Late spring (May–June): peak rainfall, often heavy thunderstorms.
- Mid- to late summer (July–August): the “summer dry spell” — humid but with reduced rainfall and increased drought stress.
- Fall (September–October): drier conditions return, ideal for aeration and overseeding.
Summer humidity in central and south Alabama regularly sits at 70–90%, which has two big lawn implications: warm-season grasses grow fast under these conditions, and fungal diseases (brown patch, dollar spot, gray leaf spot) thrive. This is why Alabama lawn care places so much emphasis on watering early in the day — humidity plus damp grass plus heat is the recipe for disease.
3. Grass types — what grows where in Alabama
How to identify your Alabama grass type
Before fertilizing, spraying herbicide, or changing mowing height, identify your grass type. Advice for Bermuda can damage Centipede or Tall Fescue, and cool-season and warm-season grasses follow different seasonal calendars. Four quick checks usually tell you what you have:
- Blade width: Bermuda is narrow (1–2 mm), Zoysia is medium (2–4 mm), St. Augustine is wide and flat (4–6 mm), Tall Fescue is medium-wide with visible veins.
- Color in winter: If your lawn goes completely brown after the first hard frost, it’s a warm-season grass (Bermuda, Zoysia, Centipede, St. Augustine). If it stays green through winter, it’s Tall Fescue.
- How it spreads: Bermuda spreads aggressively by above-ground runners (stolons) and underground rhizomes — visible horizontal runners on bare soil edges. Zoysia spreads slowly the same way. Tall Fescue grows in bunches without runners.
- Texture and color: Bermuda feels fine and bristly. Zoysia feels denser, almost carpet-like. Centipede is light apple-green. St. Augustine has wide, smooth blades. Tall Fescue is darker green with visible vein patterns.
Quick visual cues by grass type:
- Bermuda — narrow blades, aggressive runners, full sun, brown in winter, statewide.
- Zoysia — dense carpet-like growth, slower spreading, sun + light shade, premium-look lawns.
- Centipede — apple-green color, low maintenance, sandy South AL soils, sensitive to over-fertilization.
- St. Augustine — wide coarse blades, best warm-season shade tolerance, South AL + Gulf Coast.
- Tall Fescue — bunch-type, year-round green, North AL only, struggles in central/south summer heat.

Five grass species cover the vast majority of Alabama lawns: Bermudagrass, Zoysiagrass, Centipedegrass, St. Augustinegrass, and tall fescue. Picking the right one for your yard is the most consequential decision you’ll make — it determines how much sun your grass needs, how often you mow, when it goes dormant, and whether you’ll fight it for the next 20 years.
Bermudagrass — the default Alabama lawn grass
The default lawn grass across central and south Alabama. Bermudagrass thrives in full sun, recovers quickly from foot traffic, and produces the dense green carpet most homeowners picture when they think of “a great lawn.” Its main weakness is shade tolerance — it needs at least 6 hours of direct sun per day and will thin out under tree canopies.
Best Bermuda cultivars for Alabama by region
- Central Alabama (Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Montgomery): Tifway 419 — the most common premium choice. Fine-bladed, dark green, excellent durability. Must be sodded or sprigged. Developed in 1960 by the joint USDA-ARS and University of Georgia turfgrass research program at Tifton, GA.
- North Alabama (Huntsville, Decatur, Florence): Latitude 36 — newer hybrid bred for cold tolerance. Better winter survival in Zone 7 than standard Bermuda.
- South Alabama (Mobile, Dothan, Gulf Coast): TifTuf or Common Bermuda. TifTuf has improved drought tolerance for sandy soils; Common is the cheapest seeded option.
- Budget option statewide: Common Bermudagrass — seeded varieties (Princess, Yukon, etc.) cost a fraction of hybrids but are coarser-bladed and less uniform. Fine for utility lawns.
- Premium short-cut option: Tifgreen 328 — golf-course-green quality, requires reel mower to cut below 0.5 inches.
Bermudagrass mowing height: 1.0–1.5 inches for common varieties, down to 0.5 inches for hybrids if mowed weekly. Peak growth runs May through September; weekly mowing is non-negotiable during this window.
Zoysiagrass — the lower-maintenance alternative
Zoysia has become increasingly popular across central Alabama over the past decade. It produces a denser, more uniform turf than Bermuda, tolerates moderate shade (3–4 hours sun), and grows more slowly — meaning less frequent mowing. The trade-off: it’s slower to establish, more expensive to install, and can be harder to recover from damage.
Best Zoysia cultivars for Alabama by region
- Central Alabama premium choice: Emerald Zoysia — fine-bladed, dark green, the standard for high-end Birmingham and Montgomery residential.
- Central Alabama value choice: Empire Zoysia — medium-bladed, more forgiving of imperfect soil and care. Excellent middle option.
- Premium drought + shade choice: Zeon Zoysia — newer fine-bladed cultivar with excellent shade tolerance for a warm-season grass.
- North Alabama choice: Meyer Zoysia — cold-tolerant variety suited for Zone 7. Coarser blade than Emerald.
- Coastal Alabama choice: Empire or Zeon — both handle the heat and humidity of Mobile-area summers well.
Zoysia mowing height: 1.5–2.5 inches depending on variety. Weekly mowing in peak growth, biweekly often sufficient in spring and fall.
Bermudagrass vs. Zoysiagrass for Alabama lawns
The two most common questions we hear are “should I install Bermuda or Zoysia?” and “what’s the difference?” Here’s the side-by-side:

Short version: if you have full sun and don’t mind mowing every week, Bermuda gives you the densest, most golf-course-like lawn for the lowest cost. If you have moderate shade or want to mow less often, Zoysia is worth the higher establishment cost.
Centipedegrass — the low-maintenance choice
Centipede is the low-maintenance choice for Alabama lawns that don’t need to be showpieces. It tolerates Alabama’s acidic soils (down to pH 5.0) better than any other warm-season grass, requires minimal fertilization, and grows slowly enough that some homeowners only mow it every 10–14 days. Trade-offs: it’s lighter green than Bermuda or Zoysia, sensitive to heavy traffic, and doesn’t recover quickly from damage.
Centipede mowing height: 1.5–2.0 inches. Don’t scalp it — Centipede recovers slowly and can suffer “Centipede decline” if mowed too short or over-fertilized.
St. Augustinegrass — south Alabama and shade
St. Augustine is primarily a south Alabama grass — coastal plain, Mobile area, Baldwin County. It tolerates more shade than any other warm-season grass (4–6 hours sun sufficient), has a broad-bladed look distinct from Bermuda or Zoysia, and handles salt spray near the coast. Major weakness: cold sensitivity (winter-kills in north Alabama) and chinch bug susceptibility.
St. Augustine mowing height: 2.5–4.0 inches. Mow taller to maintain shade tolerance and discourage weeds.
Tall fescue — north Alabama only
The only cool-season grass that’s practical in Alabama, and only really workable in north Alabama (Zones 7a–7b). Tall fescue stays green through the winter when warm-season grasses are dormant, which appeals to homeowners who want a year-round green lawn. The catch: it struggles in central and south Alabama summer heat — leaf blade browning, thinning, and dormancy by July are common.
- Modern turf-type tall fescue cultivars (Rebel, Falcon, Tarheel) are bred for heat tolerance and look nothing like the coarse pasture fescue you might remember.
- Best for shaded north Alabama yards where Bermuda won’t thrive.
- Often blended with Kentucky bluegrass for self-repair ability.
Tall fescue mowing height: 3.0–4.0 inches. The taller cut is essential — short fescue dies in Alabama heat.
How to pick the right grass for your Alabama yard
- Full sun, central or south Alabama, you mow weekly → Bermuda (Tifway 419 if premium, Common if budget).
- Mixed sun/shade, central Alabama, you want a less frequent mow → Zoysia (Empire for value, Emerald for premium).

4. Alabama soils — red clay, sand, loam
Soil type drives water retention, root depth, fertilizer effectiveness, and how often your lawn needs to be aerated. Alabama has four roughly-defined soil regions, and which one you’re in matters more than most homeowners realize. Piedmont red clay (central Alabama)
Most of Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston, and the Birmingham metro suburbs sit on Piedmont red clay. This soil is iron-oxide-rich (hence the red color), nutrient-retentive, and naturally acidic. The downside: it’s dense and compacts easily under foot traffic or mower wheels, drains poorly when wet, and bakes hard when dry. Roots have a tougher time penetrating clay than sandier soils, so warm-season grasses tend to root shallower here than they would in better-draining ground.

Practical implications for red-clay lawns:
- Aerate at least once per year. Core aeration in early fall is the single biggest improvement you can make.
- Water less often, but deeper. Clay holds water — daily watering creates root rot conditions.
- Don’t mow when wet. Mower wheels compact wet clay into ruts that don’t recover.
- Add organic matter. Top-dressing with a thin layer of compost in spring or fall gradually loosens the structure over years.
Coastal Plain sandy soils (south Alabama)
South of the fall line — the geological boundary that roughly follows U.S. Highway 80 across the state — soils become sandier. Coastal plain soils drain freely, warm up quickly in spring, but hold less water and fewer nutrients. Lawns on sandy soil typically need more frequent watering and more frequent (lighter) fertilization than red-clay lawns.
- Water more often, less deeply. Sand doesn’t hold water — twice-weekly watering is often better than once.
- Fertilize lightly but more often. Nutrients leach through sand faster than clay.
- Aeration is less critical. Sandy soil rarely compacts the way clay does.
Tennessee Valley loam (north Alabama)
Northeast and north-central Alabama, including parts of Madison and Limestone counties around Huntsville, have richer loam soils — a balance of sand, silt, and clay that’s easier to work with than pure clay or pure sand. Loam holds water moderately well, drains adequately, and supports deeper rooting than red clay. These are some of the more forgiving soils for lawn care in the state.
Black Belt prairie (central south Alabama)
A narrow band of dark, calcareous (chalky) soil runs through central-south Alabama — including parts of Dallas, Wilcox, Sumter, and Marengo counties. Unlike most of Alabama’s acidic soils, Black Belt soils are alkaline (pH often 7.5+) and have a sticky, heavy texture when wet. If you live in this band, your lawn care needs are inverted from most Alabama advice: you may need to add sulfur (not lime), and certain grasses (Centipede, which prefers acidic soil) won’t thrive.
5. Soil pH and amendments
Soil pH measures how acidic or alkaline your soil is on a scale of 0–14, with 7 being neutral. Most plants — including most lawn grasses — prefer slightly acidic conditions, around pH 6.0–6.5. Most Alabama soils are more acidic than that.
Typical Alabama soil pH ranges
- Piedmont red clay (central Alabama): pH 4.5–6.0 (acidic).
- Coastal Plain sand (south Alabama): pH 5.0–6.5 (slightly acidic).
- Tennessee Valley loam (north Alabama): pH 5.5–6.8 (close to neutral).
- Black Belt prairie: pH 7.0–8.0 (alkaline — the exception).
Why pH matters
Soil pH controls which nutrients are available to your grass roots, regardless of how much fertilizer you apply. Below pH 6.0, phosphorus gets “locked up” in the soil and becomes unavailable. Above pH 6.5, iron and manganese availability drops. If your pH is off, fertilizer is largely wasted money.
Most Alabama lawns are too acidic for optimal grass growth, which means a periodic lime application is one of the highest-leverage soil amendments most homeowners can make.
How to test your Alabama soil — the ACES soil test
The Alabama Cooperative Extension System (ACES) soil testing program is run at Auburn University. As of 2026, a basic lawn soil test costs about $7 and returns results in roughly 2 weeks. The report tells you pH, phosphorus, potassium, calcium, magnesium, and gives lime/fertilizer recommendations tailored to your grass type.
To collect a sample:
- Use a clean trowel or soil probe. Pull 8–10 small cores from different areas of the lawn, 4 inches deep.
- Mix the cores together in a clean bucket.
- Dry the mixed soil on a sheet of paper or cardboard at room temperature (don’t use heat or sun).
- Bag about 1 cup of the dried mixed soil and ship to the ACES lab with the submission form.
Visit the Alabama Cooperative Extension System for current pricing, submission forms, and lab address. Soil tests every 3 years are the standard recommendation; annually if you’re renovating or have recurring problems.
Applying lime to raise pH
If your soil test recommends lime, the standard product is pelletized dolomitic limestone (sometimes called “pellime”). Pelletized lime is easier to spread evenly than agricultural lime (ag lime), but ag lime is cheaper for large areas. Application rates depend on how acidic your soil is and your grass type — your ACES report will give you a specific lb/1,000 sq ft recommendation.
Lime is slow-acting. Apply in late winter (January–February in central Alabama) so it has time to react with the soil before peak growth. A single fall application also works. Don’t apply lime and fertilizer at the same time — wait at least 2 weeks between applications.
6. Watering principles
Alabama watering table — by season and soil
The tuna-can test: Place 3–4 empty tuna cans on the lawn within your sprinkler zone. Run the system as you normally would. The depth of water in each can tells you exactly how much you’re applying per run. Average the cans, then adjust run time to hit the 0.5–0.75 inch per cycle target. This is the single most useful 10-minute diagnostic for an irrigation system that has never been calibrated.

More lawns are killed by overwatering than underwatering. The temptation in Alabama summer is to water the lawn every day because it’s hot — but daily shallow watering trains grass to develop shallow root systems, which then suffer during drought. The right approach is the opposite: water deeply, less often.
The one-inch-per-week rule
Across most of Alabama, established warm-season grasses need about 1 inch of water per week during active growth — combining rainfall and irrigation. This is the standard recommendation in ACES turfgrass management publications and is consistent with University of Georgia turfgrass research. Tall fescue in north Alabama needs slightly more (1.0–1.5 inches/week) during summer stress. New sod or seed needs more frequent, lighter watering until established.
How to water your Alabama lawn — step by step
Step-by-step process most Alabama homeowners can implement with a basic sprinkler:
- Step 1: Measure your sprinkler’s output. Place 3–5 straight-sided cans (tuna cans work well) around the area being watered.
- Step 2: Run the sprinkler for 30 minutes. Time it carefully.
- Step 3: Measure water depth in the cans. Average the readings. If you got 0.25 inches in 30 minutes, your sprinkler delivers 0.5 inches per hour.
- Step 4: Calculate your target runtime. For warm-season grass, aim for 0.5 inches per session, twice per week — so 1 hour of runtime per session at the example rate above.
- Step 5: Set your timer for early morning — between 4 AM and 9 AM, two days per week.
- Step 6: Re-check after a month. If grass is still showing drought stress (footprints not bouncing back, gray-blue color), increase to 0.75 inches per session.
Time of day
Early morning — between 4 and 9 AM — is the optimal watering window. Three reasons:
- Less evaporation. Cooler temperatures and lower wind mean more water reaches the soil and less is lost.
- Grass dries before evening. Wet leaf blades overnight invite fungal diseases. Morning watering gives the lawn the entire day to dry.
- Better water pressure. Municipal water systems are under less demand at dawn.
Worst time to water: late evening or overnight. Second worst: midday in peak heat (most of the water evaporates before reaching roots).
Drought response
Warm-season grasses can survive 3–4 weeks of summer drought by going dormant. Bermuda turns brown but recovers when rainfall resumes. If you have well water or no irrigation, accept the dormancy and let the lawn ride out the drought — don’t apply fertilizer or stimulate growth while the lawn is stressed.
If you do irrigate during drought, water deeply (0.75–1.0 inch) twice weekly rather than daily. This forces roots down toward residual soil moisture.
7. Mowing — the core practice
Mowing height by grass type — the reference table

Follow the 1/3 rule — never remove more than 1/3 of the grass blade in a single mow. If your Bermuda target is 1.25 inches and it’s sitting at 2.5 inches, drop it in two passes a few days apart, not one scalping cut. Raise the height by 1/4–1/2 inch during July and August heat to shade the soil and reduce evaporation. More than any other practice, mowing height and frequency determine whether your lawn looks great or struggles. The single most important rule is the one-third rule: never cut more than 1/3 of the grass blade in a single mow. This rule traces back to James B. Beard’s foundational Turfgrass: Science and Culture (1973) and is taught in every land-grant university turfgrass program in the U.S., including the USGA Green Section research program. Violating that rule stresses the grass, exposes the soil, and creates conditions for weeds and disease.

Cutting height by grass type
Each grass species has a height range that produces dense, healthy turf. Cutting below the range invites weeds; cutting above it produces sparse, stretched-out blades. Recommended ranges for Alabama lawns:
- Bermudagrass (common): 1.0–1.5 inches

How to mow your Alabama lawn — best practices

Mowing frequency by season
Alabama’s growing season is long, but growth intensity varies dramatically. Approximate frequency guidance for central Alabama warm-season grasses:
- April: weekly mowing begins as lawns green up.
- May–August (peak growth): weekly without exception. Some homeowners with Tifway Bermuda mow every 5 days in June.
- September–October: weekly initially, dropping to every 10–14 days as growth slows.
- November–March (dormancy): mostly no mowing, with occasional debris cleanup cuts.
Sharp blades matter more than you think
A dull mower blade tears the grass blade tip rather than slicing it cleanly. The torn tip browns within 24 hours, making the entire lawn look like it has drought stress. Worse, the torn surface area is much larger than a clean cut — meaning more moisture loss and more disease entry points.
Sharpen your blade after every 8–10 hours of mowing, or roughly every 4–6 weeks during peak season. Most local hardware stores can sharpen a blade for $10–15; you can also do it yourself with a metal file or bench grinder if you’re careful about maintaining the angle.
Striping and mowing patterns
Lawn stripes — the alternating light/dark bands seen on baseball fields and well-kept Bermuda lawns — are created by mowing in opposite directions. The blades reflect light differently depending on the direction they’re bent, which is what produces the visible stripes. To stripe a lawn:
- Mow in straight lines, finishing each pass before turning.
- On the return pass, mow in the opposite direction.
- A roller attachment behind the mower (or a striping kit) amplifies the effect, but isn’t required.
- Alternate the overall direction each mow — north-south one week, east-west the next — to prevent ruts and uneven growth.
Striping works best on grasses with longer blades (Zoysia, St. Augustine, tall fescue) and is less visible on closely-mown hybrid Bermuda.
Mowing wet grass — don’t
Wet grass blades clump in the mower deck, cut unevenly, and tear instead of slice. Wet clay soil compacts under mower wheels into ruts that take weeks to recover. Always wait at least 3–4 hours after morning dew burns off, or 24 hours after a heavy rain, before mowing.

ACES guidance consistently recommends that homeowners base fertilizer decisions on grass type, soil test results, and active growth rather than applying nitrogen on a fixed calendar. The numbers below are general windows; a soil test (~$7 through your county extension office) tells you what the lawn actually needs.
Reading the bag — N-P-K math: A 50-lb bag labeled 16-4-8 is 16% nitrogen, 4% phosphorus, 8% potassium. That bag contains 8 lb of actual nitrogen (50 × 0.16). If your Bermuda lawn is 5,000 sq ft and you’re targeting 1 lb of N per 1,000 sq ft per application, you need 5 lb of actual N — about 31 lb of that bag (5 ÷ 0.16). Half the bag, applied evenly with a calibrated spreader. Split the annual total into 3–4 applications during active growth, not one heavy hit.
Fertilization is the second-most-impactful practice after mowing, and it’s where most Alabama homeowners overspend, mis-time, or apply the wrong product entirely. This section covers what fertilizer actually does, what to apply, when to apply it, and how to read a fertilizer label.

Lawn fertilizer supplies the three primary macronutrients grass needs: nitrogen (N), phosphorus (P), and potassium (K). Every fertilizer label lists these three numbers in order, like “16-4-8” or “32-0-10.” The numbers represent the percentage of each nutrient by weight.
- Nitrogen (N) — drives leaf growth, density, and the deep green color. The most important nutrient for established warm-season lawns. Too much causes excessive growth and weak roots; too little causes thinning and yellowing.
- Phosphorus (P) — supports root development and seed germination. Most established Alabama lawns already have enough phosphorus in the soil; over-application creates runoff problems. Only apply phosphorus if a soil test recommends it.
- Potassium (K) — improves stress tolerance, especially winter hardiness and disease resistance. Most Alabama soils are low in potassium and benefit from regular applications.
Reading a fertilizer label
A 50 lb bag of 16-4-8 contains:
- 16% nitrogen → 8 lbs of actual N per bag

Slow-release vs. quick-release
Slow-release nitrogen (sulfur-coated urea, polymer-coated urea, IBDU) releases nutrients gradually over 6–10 weeks. Quick-release (urea, ammonium nitrate, ammonium sulfate) acts within days but is gone in 2–3 weeks. Slow-release is almost always the better choice for homeowner applications because it:
- Reduces burn risk if you over-apply slightly.
- Provides steady growth instead of a feast-and-famine cycle.
- Requires fewer applications per year.

Quick-release products have their place — particularly for late-spring green-up or correcting nitrogen deficiency mid-season — but for the standard schedule above, slow-release is the right default.

- Step 1: Measure your lawn area. Walk it off in 10-foot strides or use Google Earth’s measure tool. Calculate square footage.
- Step 2: Calculate product needed. Aim for 1 lb of nitrogen per 1,000 sq ft per application (so a 5,000 sq ft lawn needs 5 lbs of N).
- Step 3: Calibrate your spreader. Use the setting recommendation on the bag. If you’re unsure, start with a lower setting and make two passes (one north-south, one east-west) rather than one heavy pass.
- Step 4: Apply when soil is dry but rain is forecast within 48 hours. Or water in within 24 hours of application.
- Step 5: Don’t apply on windy days. The granules will scatter unevenly.

Common fertilization mistakes in Alabama
- Fertilizing in February. The warm spell that triggers garden-center visits also tricks you into feeding dormant grass. Wait for full green-up.
- Applying phosphorus without a soil test. Most established Alabama lawns don’t need it. The first “starter fertilizer” was for new seed, not for maintaining established turf.
- Single heavy application instead of split applications. Two 0.5 lb N applications spaced 4 weeks apart produce better growth than one 1.0 lb application.
- Fertilizing during drought stress. Stressed grass can’t use the nutrients and may burn.

9. Weed control — pre-emergent and post-emergent in Alabama
A thick, healthy lawn is the best weed control there is. Dense turf shades out weed seeds before they can germinate, and competitive root systems out-compete young weeds for water and nutrients. That said, no Alabama lawn is so dense that it can completely escape the seasonal flush of crabgrass, henbit, chickweed, and Poa annua. Pre-emergent vs. post-emergent — the difference
Pre-emergent herbicides create a chemical barrier in the top inch of soil that disrupts weed seeds as they germinate. They don’t kill mature plants. Apply before the seeds germinate. Post-emergent herbicides kill weeds that have already sprouted. They’re applied to visible weeds.
A balanced Alabama lawn weed-control program uses pre-emergent for the predictable annual flushes (crabgrass in spring, henbit in fall) and post-emergent for the perennials and surprises that slip through.
Spring pre-emergent — mid-February in central Alabama
The most important application of the year. Stops summer’s worst offenders: crabgrass, goosegrass, foxtail, and several broadleaf weeds. Miss this and you’ll fight these weeds all summer.
- When: Apply when 5-day average soil temperatures at 4-inch depth reach about 50°F. In central Alabama, that’s typically the second week of February (Valentine’s Day is the easy mnemonic). North Alabama runs a week later, south Alabama a week earlier.
- What: Prodiamine (Barricade), dithiopyr (Dimension), or pendimethalin — all EPA-registered active ingredients with established efficacy in turfgrass systems. All three work; the active ingredient matters less than the timing.
- How: Granular for ease of application; liquid for precision. Apply at the labeled rate.
- Water in: Most pre-emergents need 0.5 inches of rainfall or irrigation within 48 hours to activate. If no rain is forecast, irrigate.
- Split application: For heavy crabgrass pressure, apply half the rate in February and the other half in mid-March. Extends coverage 4–6 weeks into summer.
Fall pre-emergent — mid-September in central Alabama
Stops winter annuals: henbit, chickweed, annual bluegrass (Poa annua), and several other cool-season weeds that germinate in October as soil temperatures drop.
- When: Mid-September in central Alabama. Soil temperatures are dropping but nighttime lows are still in the 60s.
- What: Same active ingredients as spring (prodiamine, dithiopyr, pendimethalin).
- Why most homeowners skip this: Winter weeds aren’t visible until February, so the fall application feels theoretical. By the time you see purple henbit blooming, it’s been growing for 4 months.
Common Alabama lawn weeds and what to do about them
Crabgrass
The signature summer weed. Light green, flat-growing, distinctive splayed-blade pattern. Germinates in March–April once soil temperatures hit 55°F sustained. Most prolific in thin spots, along driveway/sidewalk edges, and in over-watered lawns.
- Prevention: February pre-emergent at the right timing.
- Treatment of young crabgrass: Quinclorac (Drive XLR8) is the standard post-emergent. Effective on crabgrass up to about 4 leaves.
- Mature crabgrass: Hard to kill without harming the lawn. Often best to accept it for the year and nail the timing next February.
Goosegrass
Looks similar to crabgrass but with a flatter, white-stemmed appearance. Germinates a few weeks later than crabgrass (May in central Alabama). Often a sign of compacted soil or poor drainage. Same pre-emergent strategy as crabgrass.
Annual bluegrass (Poa annua)
Tiny, bright green grass that produces seed heads even when mowed short. Germinates in October as a winter annual; visible in lawns from November through May. Drives Bermuda lawn owners crazy because it stays green when Bermuda is dormant — making the lawn look patchy.

- Treatment in dormant Bermuda: Glyphosate (Roundup) is sometimes used because dormant Bermuda is unaffected. Use carefully — apply only when grass is fully dormant.
Henbit and chickweed
Winter broadleaf weeds. Henbit has square stems and purple flowers (mint-family). Chickweed has small white flowers and a sprawling habit. Both germinate in October–November and bloom in February–March, often filling dormant Bermuda lawns with purple/white carpets.
- Prevention: Fall pre-emergent.
- Treatment: Three-way broadleaf herbicide (2,4-D + dicamba + MCPP). Apply on young weeds in late winter for best results.
Dallisgrass
Perennial coarse-bladed grass that forms clumps in lawns. Notoriously hard to kill once established. Spreads via short rhizomes.
- Treatment: Multiple applications of post-emergent labeled for dallisgrass over a full season. MSMA was the standard but is now restricted in many states. Newer products like Celsius or Tribute Total work but may take 2–3 applications.
- Honest approach: If you only have a few clumps, spot-treat with glyphosate, kill the area, and re-sod. Often more practical than chasing it chemically.
Nutsedge (yellow / purple)
Looks like grass at first glance but has a triangular stem (run your fingers down it — three sides). Yellow nutsedge has yellowish-green color; purple nutsedge is darker. Spreads via underground tubers (“nuts”) that survive even after the visible plant is killed.
- Treatment: Sulfentrazone (Dismiss) or halosulfuron (Sedgehammer). Multiple applications usually needed.
- Cultural control: Improve drainage — nutsedge thrives in wet spots. Fix the wet spot and the nutsedge will subside.
The integrated approach to weed control
No herbicide program substitutes for a thick lawn. The most weed-resistant Alabama lawns are managed like this:
- Right grass type for the conditions (sun, soil, traffic).
- Correct mowing height — taller mowing shades out weed seeds.
- Adequate but not excessive water and fertilizer.
- Pre-emergent twice per year on the correct timing.
- Spot-treat post-emergent only where needed.
- Hand-pull anything you catch early.
A lawn that gets all six right rarely needs more than a single pre-emergent application and minimal spot-spraying.
10. Aeration — when, why, and how
Aeration is the practice of poking holes in your lawn to relieve compaction, improve water infiltration, and let roots breathe. In red-clay Alabama, it’s arguably the highest-leverage soil improvement a homeowner can make — second only to a soil test and lime application.
Why aerate
Compacted soil is the root cause (literally) of most chronic Alabama lawn problems. When soil compacts:
- Water runs off instead of soaking in.
- Roots can’t penetrate, so the lawn stays shallow-rooted and drought-prone.
- Oxygen can’t reach roots — grass effectively suffocates.
- Thatch builds up because micro-organisms can’t break it down efficiently.
- Weeds (which often have more aggressive root systems than turf) gain a competitive edge.
Aeration creates thousands of small openings that solve all five problems at once.
Core aeration vs. spike aeration
There are two main methods:
- Core aeration: A machine pulls 2–3 inch plugs (cores) of soil out of the ground, leaving holes about 3/4 inch wide. The cores get left on the surface to break down. This is the right method for compacted red clay.
- Spike aeration: Solid spikes punch holes without removing soil. Cheaper and easier (you can buy spike attachments for shoes), but doesn’t address compaction — actually compresses surrounding soil further. Not recommended for clay.
If someone offers to “aerate” your lawn for $50, ask if they’re core-aerating or spike-aerating. Core aeration costs more (typically $150–300 for an average residential lawn) but is the only method worth doing on red clay.
When to aerate Alabama lawns
Aerate when the lawn is actively growing — so it can recover and heal the holes quickly. For warm-season grasses in Alabama:
- Best window: late August through September. The lawn is still growing actively but heat stress is easing.
- Second-best window: April–May. Growing strong but already past the spring green-up stress.
- Avoid: winter (dormant), July–early August (heat-stressed), and right after fertilization or weed control treatments.
For tall fescue (north Alabama only), aerate in early fall (September–October) to coincide with the cool-season grass’s peak growth period.
How often to aerate
- Compacted red clay (most Birmingham, Tuscaloosa, Anniston lawns): annually.
- Sandy south Alabama soil: every 2–3 years, often less.
- Loamy north Alabama soil: every 2 years.
- High traffic areas (kids, dogs, parked cars): annually regardless of soil.
After aeration — what to do next
- Leave the cores on the surface. They break down in 2–3 weeks and return organic matter and microorganisms to the soil.
- Top-dress with compost (optional but excellent). A thin layer (1/4 inch) of compost spread immediately after aeration falls into the holes and amends the soil from below.
- Apply a fall pre-emergent if it’s September. Wait at least 7 days after aeration before applying.
- Water consistently for 2 weeks. The lawn is recovering and benefits from steady moisture.
11. Overseeding in Alabama
Overseeding means spreading additional grass seed over an existing lawn to thicken it or to introduce a different grass species. In Alabama, overseeding is usually one of two things: (1) repairing thin spots in an established warm-season lawn, or (2) seeding annual ryegrass into a dormant Bermuda lawn for winter green color.
Overseeding to thicken a thin warm-season lawn
Bermudagrass and Zoysia are best repaired in late spring (May) when they’re actively growing. Centipede seeds work in late spring through early summer. Common Bermudagrass seed is widely available; hybrid Bermuda (Tifway 419, etc.) cannot be seeded — it must be sprigged or sodded.
- When: Mid-May once soil temperatures consistently exceed 70°F.
- How: Aerate the area first. Spread seed at the labeled rate. Lightly rake or top-dress with thin compost to ensure seed-to-soil contact. Water lightly twice daily for 2 weeks until germination.
- Expectation: Bermuda from seed takes 6–8 weeks to fill in. Be patient.
Cool-season overseeding for winter green
In central and south Alabama, some homeowners overseed dormant Bermuda lawns with annual ryegrass each fall to keep the lawn green from November through April. This is purely aesthetic — the Bermuda underneath is unaffected, and the ryegrass dies on its own as temperatures rise in April–May.
- When: Mid-October, after Bermuda has slowed growth but before nighttime lows drop below 50°F consistently.
- What: Annual ryegrass (sometimes called “Italian ryegrass”) at 8–10 lbs per 1,000 sq ft. Not perennial ryegrass — that doesn’t reliably die back and can compete with Bermuda.
- How: Mow Bermuda short (1 inch) right before overseeding. Spread seed evenly. Lightly rake or roll for soil contact. Water daily for the first 7–10 days until germination.
- Care during winter: Mow at 2 inches as needed (every 10–14 days). Light fertilizer in December.
- Transition out: In April, stop watering and let the ryegrass die. Bermuda underneath wakes up and takes over.
Trade-off: overseeding adds work and water cost, can stress the Bermuda underneath if mismanaged, and isn’t worth doing for everyone. Many homeowners try it once, decide brown winter is fine, and skip it forever after.
12. Lawn pests in Alabama
Alabama’s warm, humid climate is friendly to lots of insects, only some of which damage lawns. This section focuses on the handful that can actually wreck a yard if ignored.
Chinch bugs
Tiny black-and-white insects (about 1/5 inch as adults) that suck juices from grass blades, leaving straw-colored patches that spread quickly. Primarily attacks St. Augustinegrass — most common in south Alabama coastal lawns. Damage looks like drought stress that doesn’t respond to watering.
- ID: Part the grass at the edge of a yellow patch. Look for tiny black-and-white insects scurrying near the soil. A drinking-glass test (push a bottomless glass into wet soil and see what crawls up the sides) is the classic confirmation.
- Treatment: Bifenthrin or carbaryl (Sevin), labeled for chinch bugs. Granular and liquid both work. Treat the entire lawn if you find them — they spread.
- Prevention: Avoid over-fertilizing St. Augustine. Maintain proper mowing height. Reduce thatch.
Armyworms
The most destructive insect pest in Alabama lawns. Late summer (late July through early September) is peak season. Fall armyworm moths fly in, lay eggs, and within 2 weeks the resulting caterpillars can strip a Bermuda lawn down to bare stems overnight. ACES armyworm monitoring bulletins track outbreak years across the state.
- ID: Look in the morning. Pull back grass at the edge of a damaged area — you’ll see green-to-brown caterpillars 1–2 inches long, often with a distinctive “Y” on their heads. Damage spreads outward 5–10 feet per day in heavy infestations.
- Treatment: Bifenthrin or spinosad. Apply at the first sign — armyworms can devastate a lawn in 3–4 days. Treat the entire lawn, not just the visible damage area.
- Prevention: Monitor in late July. Some pros recommend a preventive treatment in early August in years with heavy armyworm pressure (varies year to year — check ACES alerts).
Fire ants
A statewide nuisance more than a lawn killer. Fire ants don’t damage grass directly, but their mounds (loose dirt piles 1–3 feet across) disrupt mowing and pose a stinging hazard.
- Treatment — mound-by-mound: Pour 1 gallon of hot soapy water directly into the mound. Or apply granular bait around the mound (slower but more reliable).
- Treatment — whole-yard: Broadcast fire ant bait (like Amdro or Extinguish) over the entire lawn in spring and fall. Costs about $40 per application and dramatically reduces mound count.
- Don’t use: Gasoline (illegal and ineffective) or boiling water alone (works on small mounds, scalds grass).
Grubs (white grubs / Japanese beetle larvae)

13. Lawn diseases in Alabama

Brown patch (Rhizoctonia)
